Principal's May, 2010 Letter

May 10, 2010

May 10 , 2010

Dear Parents:

May is such a wonderful month - trees and flowers are in bloom, the grass is green, and we pause to celebrate the life of our Blessed Mother, Mary. We offer the rosary, a crown, the Memorare, and deep devotion to the mother of Our Lord.  The students of St. Bridget School offer all of these each day during May.  On Wednesday, May 5th, the school community gathered for a May procession at the grotto where Mary was crowned by Kit Langan from Grade 8.   Rebecca Coonan from Grade 2 carried the crown while all second graders laid a carnation at her feet.  Please stop by our beautiful grotto to offer a prayer.

News:

1. I am happy to announce that St. Bridget School will add a second K1 (4 year old) program to our school.  There has been so much interest in our 4 year old program and we are pleased to accommodate those who wish to enroll their child.

2. On Monday, May 24th, at 7:00 pm, St. Bridget School will be presenting the Framingham High School Drama Company under the direction of Donna Wresinski. Their one act play brings the hot topic of bullying in our schools to the forefront for discussion and reflection.  There will be a talk back session with the actors and the director following the performance.  Come with your child!

Thank you PTO:

Did You Know:

1. Our Middle School students were treated to a Health Fair Day on April 15th.  Several guest speakers addressed various health topics pertinent for our teenage population: nutrition, dental health, teenage pregnancy, court justice, anti-bullying, suicide prevention, and focus on health.  I am most grateful to our school nurses, Pat Connolly and Marie Kane, for coordinating this enriching day for our middle schoolers.

2. As a culminating activity to a social studies unit on how industry affects our social system the third grade will be going to Lowell Mills to see history come alive.  This field trip will also be the beginning activity to a science unit on environment and pollution.  Our students have earned ice cream sundaes by learning their multiplication facts and will receive their yummy treat soon.

3.  For the next few weeks of school, the K1 Class will be finishing their alphabet and number lessons. They will also focus on a unit about zoo animals. During May, Mary's month, the children will learn to say the rosary. They will continue to talk about friendship, sharing, and respect. The children hope to spend lots of time outside enjoying the beautiful May weather.

4. From Ms. Fannon: Grade 6, 7 and 8 are working on projects that will be shared on the 18th of May.  Grade 6 - The Enlightenment period in history, Grade 7 Asian countries, and Grade 8 students can choose an event in history from 1948 to present.

Grade 6 and 7 will have Geography competitions  each Friday until the end of the school year.

5. Fourth grade will travel back in time when they visit Old Sturbridge Village to experience life in a typical early 19th century New England village.  Also, both fourth grade classes have finished lessons in the grammar book and are working on interesting and exciting activities to reinforce and practice all the skills we have learned.

6. Kindergarten has been learning about the life cycle of the butterfly.  Their caterpillars arrived after vacation and they are observing the changes and writing about them in their special butterfly book.  When the butterflies emerge from their chrysalis they will set them free outside.

7. From Mrs. Zschuschen:  Grade 8 Science students are becoming experts on chemical reactions and how to balance chemical equations. By learning the basics of chemistry this year, their freshman science classes will be more understandable for all.

Grade 7 students have just finished studying lower level animals including starfish and worms. They are now exploring animals' ability to blend in with their environment. An upcoming owl pellet lab will demonstrate the bones of animals the owl consumes as a daily diet.

Grade 6 has just explored the use of minerals in toothpaste for rubbing off stains on a ceramic tile. They also tried to relate space exploration tools with ways we use those tools in our daily lives in things like braces, joysticks, and stronger tools.

8. From Mrs. Barrett:   The 8th graders are preparing for final exam.

7th graders just wrote 3 paragraphs on what they like and dislike for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  They will be starting the next chapter on sports.

In Religion the 6th graders are learning about Samuel, Saul, and David. Next up is King Solomon.

9. From Mrs. Trombino:  Sixth and 7th Graders are finishing up their poetry anthologies, with themes including: nature, holidays, growing up, animals, and travel.  They have written poems and collected published poems that go with their theme, and each anthology introduces its theme with an essay and illustrations.  Our poetry unit will culminate with readings of some of our favorite published and original works.

In 6th grade LA, the students are beginning The Phantom Tollbooth (Norton Jester).  They'll be studying figurative language and doing lots of small projects, such as: a math wizard hunt, building a dodecahedron, and writing our own idioms.

Seventh grade is beginning The Westing Game (Ellen Raskin).  Students will be learning to construct a "who-dunnit" story by working backward through the plot.

10. During the month of April the second graders completed a unit on "Fairy Tales" which included reading and comparing many different stories, writing original stories, and finishing up with a "Royal Ball".  The Second Graders received their First Holy Communion on May 1st.  It was a wonderful ceremony and celebration!  The children did an awesome job and looked beautiful!  They are preparing to host the Ascension Thursday Mass on May 13th.  Also this month the students will be going to the Science Museum to explore further all the things we have been learning in science!

The 2009-2010 school year is quickly winding down-just 5 ½ weeks remaining and there is still so much to do.  We will continue with our academics and have some fun as well.  Many of our classes have gone or will be going on a spring field trip to enhance their curriculum.

Our eighth graders' last school day will be May 20th.  From then on they will be taking final exams, posing for cap and gown pictures, and enjoying end of the year activities before their graduation on June 1st.  We congratulate them and wish them well in their respective high schools!

Enjoy this beautiful spring weather!

God Bless You,

Mrs. Roseanne Mungovan

Principal
