Dear Parents:
Our celebration of Catholic Schools Week was a huge success!  Thank you to all who came to our special liturgy on January 31st, gave tours at our two Open House days, came to our parent Open House, provided for the teacher luncheon, doled out ice cream on Friday, supported our Barnes and Noble book fair, or volunteered in any capacity.  We could not have accomplished all of this without your assistance.  You are the best!!!!

 

I know by now most of you have heard that St. Tarcisius School will be closing in June.  This is a sad time for their school and parish community and our thoughts and prayers will be with them these next few months as they work to close their school.

 

The Archdiocese has designated our school, St. Bridget School, to be the “welcoming” school.  Being the kind, caring and Christian community that we are I am convinced that

you will join me in helping some St. Tarcisius students transition to St. Bridget School.

Any St. Tarcisius parent who wishes to continue their child’s Catholic education, will be welcome to submit an application and go through our application process for admission.   

 
On March 1st you will receive a re-registration packet for the 2010-2111 school year.  Our re-registration period runs from March 1st to April 1st.  Parents who wish to apply for financial assistance can apply online at www.factstuitionaid.com and then must call Mrs. Sebastian at 508 875- 5959.  Thank you!


Thank You, PTO!
On behalf of the staff and students I would like to thank the PTO for these recent donations:

·        One new lunch table (picnic style) to replace an “old” one with missing stools (irreplaceable)

·        A new large screen monitor for our school library.  This is hooked up to the computers for use with library class lessons

·        A donation to the principal’s discretionary fund.

 

Thank You, Students and Parents:
Our fundraiser on Friday, January 29th, for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti was a huge success.  Our “dress down” day coupled with our Munchkin and Hot Chocolate “breakfast” raised $950. for Catholic Relief Services.  This week the Advancement Office is sponsoring a contest to “Guess the baby picture of our staff members” also for the Haitian relief fund.

Our February coin drive is in full swing.  This year the PTO has opted to give half of the amount raised to our Haitian relief fund and the other half to our sister school in Haiti, L’Ecole du Village.

 

Did You Know:

  1. On January 15th, four 7th grade students (Conor Dykeman, Annie Budra, Emily Generazio, Caroline Rakip) accompanied by Mrs. Trombino, attended a workshop for Middle School students at Boston College.  The title of the workshop was “Stand up, Speak Out”. 
  2.  The Annual Fund has received over $11,000. in donations thus far.  Thank You!
  3. From Ms. Fannon:  Grade 6 constructed Roman architecture structures in class. The coliseums and aqueducts are amazing.  The class will now begin studying Ancient China and celebrate the Chinese New Year.

In small groups Grade 8 created their own Utopia to tie in with reading the novel The Giver.
Grade 7 students, working in small groups, are discovering many facts about Western European countries. They will have a European Fair on Wednesday.

The Middle School has started their Junior Achievement Course that is taught by St. B’s parents - the topic for this year is Economics for Success.  This explores personal finance and students’ education and career options based on their skills, interests, and values.

  1. February may be a short school month but is filled with

many new and fun learning experiences
for the K1 students. Some of the topics being covered
include: Groundhog Day and shadows
President’s Day, dental health, the Winter Olympics, and
 the face value of coins. A couple of
highlights will be celebrating Valentine’s Day, and our
100th Day of school. This class is always busy!

  1. 5th Grade is mathematically and geometrically creating

Chinese Dragons. They will learn about the Chinese
calendar, and conclude their learning on Monday,
February 8th, with a day of celebration.  The student
will begin with a Dragon parade, make origami shapes,
and end the day with a movie tracing Chinese history.
The celebration of Chinese New year is a tradition in

China
as well as Mrs. Logue’s 5th grade.
Sadly, Mrs. Logue’s 5th grade class will be having a going away party for our three new friends, Ha, Marc, and Kim, Korean exchange students who have been with us since the beginning of January. It has been an honor and a pleasure to have them with us. The class will look forward to exchanging letters throughout the remainder of the year.

6.      In Math, the third grade is beginning the concept of
       division.  In Social Studies the children are
       entering into studying governments: federal, state, local
       and conclude with a study of
Washington
       DC, their topic for the State Fair.

7.      To celebrate the 100th day of school, KB and KM are collecting 100 non-perishable food items to donate to the food pantry.  As of 2/3 KB has 66 items and KM has collected 86!

8.      Our first graders are completing a unit on the Gingerbread Man.  The children have compared versions of this classic fairy tale, re-wrote a story with a new ending and, at Open House, made a keepsake gingerbread boy or girl from applesauce, cinnamon and glue.  In religion class they have been learning that Jesus loves them so much that He sent the Holy Spirit.  The class is looking forward to their 100th day and its activities.

9.      During the month of January the second grade children wrote about their Reconciliation experience, completed a mini unit on snowflakes and worked on several activities to prepare for Catholic Schools Week. The second graders will be celebrating the 100th day of school.  In cooperative groups and centers they will work on various 100th day math activities.  The children will be having a 100 word spelling test.  For each day the test will be given in 25 words increments.  These words are some of our previous spelling words since the beginning of the school year.   In celebration of “Black History Month" the children will research and complete a book report on a famous Black American of their choice.   They will also write a letter to their special valentine.   The week before winter vacation will be a review week and the children will use the week to review many learned skills and concepts.  February will be BUSY!!!!!!   

10.   Sixth and seventh grade language arts classes have been focusing on grammar topics.  Sixth grade has created nouns posters, and they have been learning about different types of pronouns.  They will finish up a unit on punctuation shortly after vacation.  Seventh grade has made preposition posters, and they have been learning about verb forms, prepositions, and verb complements.  They’ve been playing ”Parts of Speech BINGO” and “Punctuation BINGO,” and students will design a grammar game of their own. 

 In writing, sixth grade has completed their “How-To” essays, and seventh grade has been working on descriptive essays in which they have designed the ultimate tree house. 

 The class will begin their next in-class novel right after February vacation.  Sixth grade will be reading The Cay, and this week they have begun various pre-reading activities to learn about the geography of the Caribbean Islands, coral reefs, and the island of Curacao.  Seventh grade will be reading Where the Red Fern Grows.  Their pre-reading activities will include researching coon dogs and the Ozark Mountain region of Oklahoma.

During the month of February and March, they will also focus on nonfiction topics associated with the students’ Science Fair projects.  Students will be assigned an oral presentation on an aspect of their research.  Time will be spent in the computer lab practicing research skills, such as taking notes from a website, keeping a research log, and citing sources throughout the research process.  Once the Science Fair gets closer, they will review editing for content, grammar, and mechanics.  Students will also be introduced to the concept of writing an abstract for their research paper.
