Principal's Nov, 2009 Letter

November 2 , 2009

Dear Parents:

Oh what a beautiful fall season this has been!  The colorful leaves displayed in these autumn days sometimes take your breath away as we appreciate the fruits of God’s wondrous works.  Soon Thanksgiving will be upon us and the start of the Advent Season.

Our Thanksgiving Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, November 25th at 10:15 am in St. Bridget Church.  Please join us.

The faculty of St. Bridget School continues to focus on one virtue each month.  On October 8th the entire school assembled for an introduction to RESPECT.  Each letter of the word was colorfully displayed by students and a discussion followed.  We spoke about ways to show respect and student helpers held up key phrases to remember: Please, Thank You, No, Thank You, Excuse me, Don’t walk in front of a speaker, Pardon Me, Hands Off, Hold Doors, and Don’t Interrupt. These colorful signs were made by our Extended Day students and you can see them posted around our school building.

The virtue for the month of November is COMPASSION.  To show our compassion for those who are less fortunate St. Bridget School students will collect items for our parish food pantry.  Coffee, tea, cocoa, cookies etc. are those items most in need, as well as any and all non-perishables. Please make an effort to send in your donation by November 12th.  Thank you!!!!

News:

Our Middle School math teacher, Mrs. Semima Karasch, will be out of school for at least six more weeks.  Following last summer’s kidney transplant her doctor felt she was in need of additional time to recuperate. I have hired Ms. Kelleigh Sheehan, a recent graduate of Framingham State College and a math major.  Ms. Sheehan has been working with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders since October 13th.  We are rolling along!

The new Technology Teacher for Grades 2-6 is Ms. Pamela St. Aimee, an employee of Technology Growth Partners (a firm which employees technology teachers for private schools).  We welcomed her on October 20th.  I know you will introduce yourself to these teachers and welcome them to our school community.

Mrs. Feeney and I have twice tested our new IRIS (Immediate Response Information System) program.  This system is new to all and we have learned a new lesson each time we sent out a test message.  We will be using this program to alert you to snow emergencies as well as any other emergency that may arise.  Thank you for your feedback and patience!

Did You Know:

  1. Culminating a unit on Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims, grade 3 will venture to Plymouth to visit Plimoth Plantation, the Mayflower, and the Wampanoag Living Museum.  Grade 3 will be “energized” when they enter into the forces of nature.
  2. From Ms. Fannon: Grade 7 and 8 recently visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The 7th graders investigated Mexican artists with our art teacher, Ms. Tomkins as the docent, and the 8th graders investigated American artists: Copley and Sargent comparing and contrasting both artists.  They all went to lunch at Acapulcos in Framingham and ordered lunch in Spanish.

Grade 6 just completed their Egyptian unit and will begin Ancient Greece.

Grade 8 just completed a novel called Ashes of Roses which was a novel about the Shirtwaist Triangle Fire in New York City in early 1900’s.

  1. 5th and 6th Grades had a wonderful experience at Nature’s Classroom in Maine. The students lived together in a camp dorm.  In the Dining Hall the students learned how to serve food, clean up, and to eliminate wasteful portions of food. In their field classes, students went to the woods, to the marsh and to the beach. Since the weather had been terrible the Sunday before they left, the beach had all sorts of creatures washed up on it. They saw a lot, and learned a lot. All the students, teachers and chaperones thank you for your prayers.
  2.  First graders shared a biblical snack of bread, cheese, grapes, raisins and olives. It was exciting to be sharing the same kinds of foods that the Holy Family shared when they were alive. The children  are also performing skits in period costumes of the story of Zaccheaus.

The class has begun learning subtraction in math and they are also starting up  Math Minute speed tests.
In
Reading – they are learning to make a book report for ‘Baggy Books’ and then sharing them with classmates.

October is the month for a pumpkin investigation and the children will weigh, measure, observe how it ripens, gut a pumpkin and count seeds! In November they will observe how the pumpkin decays.

The students went on a  Soil Investigation field trip at the beginning of the month and spent time writing poems about the trip. They learned about what soil is made of and how worms help make the soil healthy and nutritious and how everyone benefits from worms. Then they looked for worms in the compost!

5.  From Mrs. Barrett:  8th grade Spanish:  Students have been working on descriptive adjectives by using pictures to create sentences.  They also are learning more about going to a restaurant and asking for forks, spoons, etc… The class will also be talking about the Day of the Dead.

7th grade Spanish: The students  have come to the end of our preliminary unit and are ready for the test. Some of the topics studied are: classroom words, the alphabet, days, months, dates, numbers, colors, telling time, greetings and goodbyes, and the weather. They have covered a lot of information!  Next they will be talking about what they like and don’t like to do.

7th grade Religion: Students have been talking about Respect during the month of October. They have done skits modeling respect in different situations. The class has also been talking about God’s attributes and creation.  Next they will be talking about Adam and Eve, and the ten Commandments.

6th grade Religion:  The students also have been talking about Respect along with free will and conscience.  Soon they will be starting the “Keeping Children Safe” Program.

  1. During the month of October the second graders started their literacy centers and reading groups.  The classes took a field trip to the George Hill Orchard in Lancaster.  They took part in an interactive theater, learned about apples, made cider and went on a hayride.  They have practiced "Purr-fect" handwriting and had a Pumpkin Math Day!!!
  2. The kindergarten classes learned about the sound made by the letters m and b. The children practiced writing the letters and did many activities.  In math they learned about sorting, position words, shapes and patterns.  In science and social studies they learned about fall and did many Halloween activities.
